(KRON) – Breezy conditions and cool temperatures continue today. There are elevated fire weather concerns on Monday for inland areas of the North Bay and East Bay, due to wind and dry conditions. A Red Flag Warning went into effect this morning through 8:00 p.m. Monday for Solano County and the Sacramento Valley. Above normal temperatures return next week.
Key Messages
Sunday: breezy to gusty winds and below normal temperatures Monday and Tuesday: lingering gusty northerly winds, winds ease by Tuesday Sunday through Tuesday: elevated Fire Weather concerns, warmer and drier conditionsSunday
Despite the transition from onshore to northerly winds, and even though breezes have subsided somewhat overnight, it will be breezy to today.
Wind gusts of 15 to 35 mph are in the forecast today, although gusts closer to 45 mph may occur over higher terrain above 2,000 feet. Winds will be strongest over the coastal waters, along the coast, as well as over higher terrain. As high pressure over the Pacific Ocean builds in late Sunday and into Monday morning, the winds will increase again. Winds will be strongest along the Pacific Coast and points westward, with gusts close to or above 45 mph. Please remain vigilant: avoid activities that could spark grass or brush fires. Also, it would be a good idea to secure loose outdoor articles (such as trash cans or lawn furniture).
As for temperatures, it will remain cooler today due to a colder airmass. Additionally, the temperatures will "feel" a little cooler given the breezy to gusty winds. Highs will be in the upper 50s to upper 70s.
Monday through Mid-week
A gusty northerly flow will persist on Monday. High pressure will begin to move in, kicking off a warming and drying trend. Temperatures will warm up 5 to 10 degrees through midweek. Warmer and drier conditions combined with stronger northerly flow will lead to elevated fire weather concerns. Given the bumper crop of grass/finer fuels this season, this setup could allow for quicker spread of grass fires, especially interior North and East Bay.
Wednesday
The peak of the warm-up takes place on Wednesday with maximum ridging over the Bay Area. Highs across the interior will reach into the 90s. Heat Risk values reach the moderate range for these locations. Lingering onshore flow and cooler Sea Surface Temperatures will keep the coastal areas in check.
Thursday & Friday
Temperatures begin to cool as the ridge is flattened by a fast-moving area of low pressure moving into Northern California.
