MOORPARK—The Madhouse on Mountain Trail belongs to the Monsters of Mulholland, at least for one day.
Calabasas sprinters Marley Scoggins, Malia Rainey and Olivia Kirk breezed across the finish line in the Division 3 girls final of the 100 meters to secure the top three spots — gold, silver and bronze — at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Moorpark High.
Ryan Moore, the most prolific Moorpark boys basketball coach this century, famously dubbed the Musketeers’ home turf the “Madhouse on Mountain Trail.”
Calabasas rules the winding canyons of Mulholland Highway, and now, the rubber track off Mountain Trail Street.
Scoggins, a Calabasas junior, dominated the girls 100 race in 11.59 seconds, a new Division 3 meet record.
Rainey, a sophomore, followed in 11.68 while the Kirk, a junior who previously starred for Royal’s Ventura County flag football championship squad, crossed in 11.82.
Oaks Christian’s Kyra Terry (11.95) and Devyn Sproles (12.06) could not keep up with the Coyotes, settling for fourth and fifth place, respectively. Calabasas freshman Deja Egans (12.12) was seventh while Thousand Oaks’ Trs’Ta Mitchell (12.21) and Taylor Falk (12.29) battled in the sprint.
Eight of the nine finalists in the 100 race represent the Marmonte League.
Calabasas also dominated in the girls 200. Scoggins finished first in 23.84, Kirk in second in 24.24 and Rainey took fourth in 24.51.
Egans was third in the 300 hurdles in 45.03.
The Coyotes opened the day by crossing the 4×100 relay first in 46.12 seconds. That first-place score was nullified, however, by a lane disqualification. Oaks Christian was second in 46.53, and Thousand Oaks was third in 47.56.
All of the CIF-SS champions advance to the Masters Meet next Saturday, May 24, at Moorpark High.
CANYON’S THREE-HEADED MONSTER
Canyon’s girls team had an afternoon to remember as it won the Division 2 team title.
The school’s power trio finished helped lead the way with a one-two-three finish in the 400.
Lanai Gant, a senior, galloped to 400 gold in 54.92 seconds, followed closely by Alaya Graves-Hogains (55.63) and freshman Lyric Scott (56.74). That was the same order they finished in during the CIF-SS prelims the previous week.
Canyon’s quartet of Graves-Hogains, Scott, Gant and Emoni Wright smoked the competition and won the 4×100 relay wire-to-wire in 46.83.
HEARTBREAK TO REDEMPTIONNewbury Park senior Abigail Pace won the Marmonte League championship in the girls 100 hurdles earlier this spring. She was leading her Division 2 race at the CIF-SS finals when she tripped on the third to last hurdle and could not finish.
Pace picked herself up from the heartbreaking mishap with a measure of personal redemption.
The Panther completed the 300 hurdles in 46.83 later in the afternoon.
THE RAZOR’S EDGE
Notre Dame senior Aaron Uzan won his race by a hundredth of a second. The second-place finisher took silver, also by a hundredth of a second.
Yes, the Division 3 boys 110 high hurdles race was ridiculously close, fit for the finest photo finish of any race at the CIF-SS championships.
Uzan, who took third in the event in 2024, finished first in 14.22 seconds. He edged out Servite’s Blaise Burwell at14.23, who slipped past Notre Dame’s Beckham Borquez at 14.24.
The Notre Dame boys took home the Division 3 title, finishing a few points ahead of runner-up Servite.
