‘We will not return to freedom of movement’, minister says amid youth visa deal ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

The Prime Minister has persistently rejected any plans for a youth visa scheme over fears that would cause immigration numbers.

Speaking to Sky News, Nick Thomas-Symonds defended a possible agreement on youth mobility saying: “Anything that was agreed on youth mobility – which would be opportunities for young British people to experience different cultures and travel the world – would be consistent with the objectives of the migration white paper, which is to bring the levels of migration down.”

EU-UK deal is in the ‘final hours’

“I always expected it to go to the wire because we are negotiating extremely hard in the national interest.”

Thomas-Symonds said the Government is aiming for a “deal that we can say makes our borders more secure, is good for jobs and growth and brings people’s household bills down”.

Another objective is to allow British people to use fast lanes in airport immigration.

“I think that will be something that is very helpful to British people,” the Cabinet Office Minister said.

No return to freedom of movement

A youth visa scheme will not be a return to freedom of movement a minister has said despite the Government previously rejecting the scheme.

Starmer, however, has said that while while freedom of movement was a “red line” in talks, “youth mobility is not freedom of movement”.
