Point Loma Nazarene University has launched the Biotech Pathway Scholarship, which covers full tuition and fees for two years for transfer students from Southwestern or Miramar Colleges who enroll in STEM majors at PLNU.
In partnership with the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp., selected students will take part in a 10-week summer research program before transferring. This includes 400 hours of hands-on biotech and life sciences training, mentorship, free on-campus housing, and a stipend. Each student will be matched with three mentors: a faculty member, an industry professional, and a peer.
PLNU is one of only four institutions named a Verified Program of Life Sciences Talent through EDC’s Advancing San Diego program—an initiative that recognizes accessible, workforce-aligned training.
“At PLNU, we are committed to expanding access to high-quality STEM education and equipping students with the skills and mentorship needed to thrive in San Diego’s biotech sector,” said Dr. Kerry Fulcher, president of PLNU. “Through the Biotech Pathway Scholarship, we are not only opening doors for talented community college students but also strengthening the diverse pipeline of innovators who will shape the future of life sciences in our region.”
Community colleges reflect the region’s diversity and serve as a key source of talent for growing industries. Programs like this aim to bridge gaps by offering financial support and direct industry experience.
“Increasing access to education and work-based learning opportunities is essential to strengthening San Diego’s economy,” said Mark Cafferty, President & CEO at EDC. “EDC is thrilled and proud to see PLNU leading an inspiring and intentional initiative to support community college transfer students in accessing and thriving in our region’s biotech industry.”
