‘He quit’ – Liverpool fans told they should treat Trent Alexander-Arnold like Jurgen Klopp ...Middle East

There is no difference between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jurgen Klopp’s decisions to leave Liverpool – they both quit.

That’s according to former Premier League striker and lifelong Reds fan Tony Cascarino, who told supporters to treat the defender as they treated Klopp when he left – as a departing hero and all-time legend.

Some Liverpool fans gave Trent an earful when he came on the pitch during last weekend’s 2-2 draw, as boos sounded out around Anfield.

Many supporters joined talkSPORT on air to condemn the behaviour of their fellow Reds.

But while some have defended booing the departing star ahead of his anticipated free transfer to Real Madrid, a few of the club’s star players have signalled their disappointment at the scenes.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was one of the first to hit back at the boos, while footage from the game shows midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was not happy at what he heard from the Anfield stands.

Mohamed Salah has since come out in defence of his teammate, insisting he ‘doesn’t deserve’ hate for his decision to leave his boyhood club for Spanish giants Real.

He even insisted the 26-year-old should ‘get the best farewell’ and leaves the Liverpool as ‘one of the best players in their history’.

And now Cascarino has added his voice to the chorus, insisting there is no difference between Alexander-Arnold and Klopp.

The German boss departed at the end of last season after saying his batteries had run out, but was given a legend’s farewell by the club and supporters, is still a beloved figure with fans and was even compared to Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

Cascarino insists Alexander-Arnold deserves to be held in the same reverence.

“I’m proud Trent Alexander-Arnold played for Liverpool – he’s been a great servant and brilliant footballer,” said the talkSPORT Weekend Breakfast host.

“Sometimes things change circumstances. He’s been there since a six-year-old. I saw him cry his eyes out in front of the Kop when it first came out that he was leaving, he’ll be gutted.

“For him, this would be painful, and I just have one message to the Liverpool fans on this…

“Jurgen Klopp can quit the club and that’s OK, that was OK because he’s not gone anywhere else, he’s now on adverts and everything else.

“But he quit the club, take nothing against him doing that, and he’d been successful.

“But what about the parade? Are you gonna boo Trent at the parade? I’m gonna go up to the parade in Liverpool, are you gonna boo him on the bus if they do the open bus where they’re parading the title?

“How’s he gonna feel? Maybe he’ll think, ‘I don’t want to be on that bus. I don’t want to be booed at’.

“I get it on the football field to a degree, but think of what he’s achieved for this football club, he’s won everything, he played a major part in every trophy and he never shirked away from anything.”

Co-host Natalie Sawyer added on the situation: “Mo Salah has spoken out and he’s not happy. He’s told the Liverpool fans they should not have booed Trent Alexander-Arnold when he came on during that draw with Arsenal.

“This is what he says personally on Trent: ‘He says he needs to change and challenge himself. He spoke to me about it. He says it’s so tough mentally for someone to be 20 years in a club. It is the place you love because I love the place, but going every day to the same place mentally, you could be depressed’.

“He is 26 years old and a league title winner twice. What more could he have done?

“Obviously, the Liverpool players have spoken out about it as well, and we’ve had a lot of views on it. And there’ll be some that are fully in agreement with some of those fans.

“Of course, we always say you’re entitled to your views, we understand that, but personally for me, I would never boo a player. I just don’t know the need to do it.”
