Brazil and Inter Milan legend Lucio has been hospitalised and placed in intensive care after suffering burns to multiple parts of his body.
The 47-year-old is receiving treatment at a hospital in Brasilia, following the incident which occurred on Thursday.
Lucio helped Inter win the treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions LeagueThe facility treating the former centre-back released a statement and said Lucio was ‘stable, conscious, and under constant observation.’
A further statement shared on Lucio’s Instagram story read: “Out of respect for our friends, fans and the press, we inform you that former player Lucio recently suffered a domestic accident, which resulted in burns on his body.
“He is stable, conscious and receiving all necessary medical care.
“His injuries are being treated with specialized care, and his clinical condition is improving positively
“We are immensely grateful for the affection, prayers and messages of support that we have received at this delicate time.
“We ask that our family’s privacy be respected and we will inform you of any relevant news through official channels.
“With faith, strength and God’s support, he will recover soon.”
The extent and cause of Lucio injuries have not been disclosed.
The 47-year-old is widely regarded one of the best Brazilian defenders.
Part of the 2002 World Cup winning Brazil squad, Lucio made 105 international caps over 11 years and scored four goals
At a club level, the Brazilian started out at Internacional, before moving to Bayer Leverkusen, with whom he reached the 2002 Champions League final.
Lucio retired from playing football in 2020In 2004, Lucio moved to Bayern Munich and went on to win three cups and three Bundesliga titles with the German side.
After moving to Inter Milan in 2009, Lucio starred in Jose Mourinho‘s iconic treble winning side in 2010, beating his former side Bayern to lift the Champions League trophy.
The 47-year-old joined Juventus for a season following his time at Inter to win the Supercoppa Italiana before returning to Brazil for his final years of playing.
The former centre-back announced his retirement from professional footballer in January 2020.
