Mizzou defensive line coach Al Davis announced his resignation on social media Friday night.
In a statement, Davis said he was stepping down to focus on “family matters.” He had been on staff with Eli Drinkwitz since 2021.
“I’ve made the decision today to resign from my coaching position at the University of Missouri due to personal reasons to focus on family matters,” Davis said. “I want to thank Coach Drinkwitz for giving me the opportunity to coach here over the last few years and wish the program well. They have a bright future under his leadership.”
Drinkwitz later announced that David Blackwell will take over for Davis.
“Today I accepted Coach Davis’ resignation, as he is stepping away from our program,” Drinkwitz said in a statement. “I want to thank him for his time with us and wish him the best moving forward.
“We are fortunate to have a veteran in David to be able to step in and fill any additional coaching needs we might have at that position. We’re looking forward to a seamless transition as we continue preparations for the 2025 season.”
Blackwell joined the Mizzou staff in 2023 as an analyst. He then moved into an on-field role in 2024. Blackwell brings more than 3 decades of college coaching experience to the job. He has 11 years of experience as a defensive coordinator.
Davis becomes the second defensive assistant to leave Mizzou since the end of the 2024 season. The Tigers also lost linebackers coach D.J. Smith last December. Smith left to take the defensive coordinator job at App State, his alma mater.
