Cal Fire: Prescribed burn scheduled at Shamrock Ranch near Laytonville ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

A prescribed burn was scheduled to be conducted at the Shamrock Ranch in northern Mendocino County for much of May, the Mendocino Unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reported.

In a press release, Cal Fire explained that its crews “will be conducting a vegetation management prescribed burn on the Shamrock Ranch (which) will treat approximately 1,000-acres of chaparral and understory vegetation within oak woodlands and mixed conifer habitats, creating a mosaic of variously burned vegetation and islands of unburned habitat.”

The burn was expected to begin last week, and “continue intermittently as favorable weather conditions present themselves,” continuing until no later than “Saturday May 31, 2025.” The hours of burning are from “approximately 8 a.m. (to) approximately 3 p.m. daily.” Cal Fire also notes that “this project burn will be conducted under strictly controlled weather and fuel conditions, (and that) smoke and aircraft may be visible in the area.”

Cal Fire describes the Shamrock Ranch as being located “in the northern portion of Mendocino County, east of Highway 101, and south east of the town of Laytonville,” and that burning there will add “to significant work underway throughout the state, and brings California one step closer towards meeting state fuels reduction goals directed by the California Fire Plan and the California Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan.”
