At least, that was the case on Wednesday after a tussle between Chili’s and rival TGI Friday’s.
Rarely are battles like this clean, and both restaurants came to play.
On Wednesday, the first shot was fired by TGI Friday’s, and it hit Chili’s where it hurts the most – mozzarella sticks.
The post to X warned Chili’s to “stay in their lane.”
It continued: “Y’all are not mozzarella stick people. We are. That’s it. That’s the tweet.”
And to rub dirt in the wound, TGI Friday’s didn’t even directly tag Chili’s in the post.
Instead, it simply put a chili emoji, as the gauntlet was thrown down in another tale of the restaurant wars.
CHILI’S FIRES BACK
But Chili’s had no issue picking it up a day later.
The official account of the chain took issue with not being tagged directly, and fired back with a devastating blow of its own.
The reply said: “@ us next time…also, we honestly didn’t know you were still open. Congrats!”
The reply is referring to the financial troubles that TGI Friday’s has faced in recent times.
The US Sun reported on the sweeping measures the chain is taking after filing for bankruptcy in 2024.
This includes major menu changes and increase to the quality of the food.
THE AFTERMATH
And just like that, it was over, another scrap in the restaurant wars.
Who had won the fight it was hard to say, but the scuffle had left both restaurant chains badly bruised to say the least.
Perhaps something that undermined Chili’s was the top comment on their post criticizing the mozzarella sticks at the restaurant.
The comment said: “I had a mozz stick at your Scranton branch and the cheese was still partially frozen. Please fix this.”
Restaurant closures in 2025
Denny’s – Denny’s has confirmed that up to 150 locations are set to close in the US by the end of the year as many of them are no longer profitable.
Red Lobster – The chain has said that it plans to close over 100 stores across the country this year as new CEO Damola Adamolekun takes over.
TGI Friday’s – TGI Friday’s is still being forced to shutter locations thanks to a bankruptcy filing, including 30 in April alone.
Applebee’s – This chain is projecting a loss of 20 to 35 Applebee’s spots in 2025 but is teaming up with IHOP to introduce dual-branded locations with a curated menu of the two’s best items.
Noodles & Company – This emporium is set to close between 17 and 21 locations in 2025 following a difficult 2024.
Chili’s then responded: “We’re sorry that your mozz stick wasn’t cooked properly, that’s not up to our standards.
“Would you please send us more details at chilis.com/contact-us so we can look into this? Thanks!”
It’s hard to say if Chili’s lost some of its credibility in the fight with this, but by this point, the dust had already settled.
One comment said: “These restaurant accounts are savage. Y’all need a royal rumble.”
So it looks like the restaurant wars will live on another day, until the next time an admin decides to take a shot at the competition.
