To the Editor:
I am so disappointed in the shortsightedness of those in our community who think destroying Alex Thomas Plaza in the center of our City of Ukiah is a good “business idea”! Almost 40 years ago, when the old firehouse on that site was torn down, the City Planning Commission approved the building of a gas station and Quick Mart on that same spot. I wrote the first appeal letter to the City that was then seriously supported by local businesses and local Ukiah people. Colleen Henderson was the Mayor, and the appeal was won, resulting in the construction of Alex Thomas Plaza. I wrote that appeal on yellow legal paper while cooking dinner, and with my infant daughter, Gina, in my left arm. My daughter is now 39 years old, and that park has hosted thousands of public and private events for almost her entire life, and has served countless thousands of people.
Now someone wants to put that precious resource into the hands of a few at the personal expense of many. If it’s time to tear down the old courthouse, then so be it, but please don’t claim that making the newly vacant lot into a small square can be an excuse to replace Alex Thomas Plaza for the sake of a very few business buildings. Ukiah can have two parks and remodel or rebuild or fill in spaces for new businesses. We the people of Ukiah own our parks, and we own the future of our City. Help keep Ukiah vibrant, alive and beautiful by working to preserve as well as increase our public park spaces. Keep Alex Thomas Plaza and the memory of the enormous good done by the entire Thomas Family alive in Ukiah.
