Electric vehicle infrastructure startup Gravity has announced plans to install eight new charging stations across the Greater Los Angeles area. The sites, expected to open by the end of 2025, will feature ultra-fast 500 kW chargers designed to significantly reduce charging times for EV drivers.
The stations will be located in East Pasadena, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Huntington Beach, Long Beach, Manhattan Beach, North Hills and Thousand Oaks, the company said in a news release. These locations were selected, in part, to fill gaps in fast-charging access across the region.
Each site will host approximately 12 of Gravity’s proprietary chargers, which are capable of delivering up to 500 kilowatts of power. That level of output could allow certain vehicles to reach an 80% charge in under 10 minutes, though actual charging times depend heavily on the make and model of the car and its battery capacity.
Designed for convenience and future tech
Gravity’s charging system includes features such as a swing-arm cable mechanism intended to make plugging in easier and safer. The arms retract automatically once charging is complete to keep walkways clear.
The stations will also include technology designed for emerging vehicle trends. Gravity says each site will have infrastructure to support autonomous vehicles, as well as bi-directional charging—allowing vehicles to return electricity to the grid during periods of high demand. These capabilities align with broader trends in EV infrastructure, including grid resilience and integration with renewable energy sources.
The project is being developed in partnership with a national corporate partner, though Gravity has not disclosed the name. The move is part of a broader effort by the company to scale its EV charging network across major U.S. cities.
“These new 500kW sites are going to be a game-changer for Los Angelenos,” Gravity founder and CEO Moshe Cohen said in the news release. “They will be far faster and more reliable than anything drivers and fleet operators have experienced, with autonomous vehicle engineering and vehicle-to-grid equipment that will make them the most advanced sites in the nation.”
Founded in New York City, Gravity launched its first fast-charging site in Manhattan earlier this year. The company has positioned itself as a competitor to more established EV charging providers by focusing on compact, high-output urban installations.
Addressing infrastructure gaps
While Southern California remains a national leader in EV adoption, the pace of charging infrastructure expansion has not always kept up with growing demand—especially for faster charging options that allow drivers to quickly top off their batteries. Public fast chargers are often concentrated in commercial or highway-adjacent areas, leaving many neighborhoods with limited access.
If completed as planned, Gravity’s new stations could help alleviate some of those pressure points. However, questions remain about how accessible these chargers will be to the public, what pricing models the company will use, and how the stations will integrate with existing networks.
The news and editorial staffs of Southern California News Group and The San Diego Union-Tribune had no role in this post’s preparation.
