Keith Mitchell first-round leader @ 60/1  Patrick Reed first-round leader @ 66/1  Sepp Straka to win 12:27 three-ball @ 23/20

Mitchell can start hot in Charlotte

Not for the first time this season, Keith Mitchell shot a blistering opening round to take the early lead at last week’s Truist Championship before settling for a tied-seventh finish in the tournament.

The 33-year-old shared the first-round lead at both the Valspar Championship and Houston Open earlier in the year, was second in the Texas Open after day one and was also tied-fifth after 18 holes of the Cognizant Classic.

He has a habit of getting out of the blocks quickly and that has been evidenced at Quail Hollow, where he was tied-second after round one of the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship, in a share of eighth the following year and then tied-fourth in 2021.

Reed to make his presence known early

Plying his trade on the LIV circuit, Patrick Reed is still a very capable player and he proved that when finishing third last month at the Masters – a tournament he won back in 2018.

The American has a solid record at Quail Hollow, finishing tied-second at the 2017 PGA Championship and adding two top-10 finishes from his next three trips to the North Carolina-based course.

Reed found himself just two shots off the early pace when fighting for the Major eight years ago and if his form in Miami last month is anything to go by, where he held the first-round lead in the LIV event, then he could be primed to make an early move.

Straka to keep the good vibes going

Austrian Sepp Straka will be full of confidence after last week’s Truist Championship victory – his second PGA Tour title of the season and fourth in total – and he can pick up where he left off by winning his three-ball on day one.

The 32-year-old is playing arguably the best golf of his career and he enters this week at a career-high ninth in the world rankings, testament to the fantastic performances he has been regularly churning out.

Straka recorded his best Quail Hollow finish at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, finishing tied-eighth, and he should have the measure of Sahith Theegala and Max McGreevy.

Theegala’s two efforts in Charlotte have produced results of 56th and 52nd and he enters this week having had to withdraw before the final round of the Truist Championship due to a neck injury.

As for McGreevy, he missed the cut on his sole Quail Hollow outing and he has failed to record a top-10 finish from his last eight appearances.
