ALISO VIEJO — San Clemente’s boys lacrosse team put on an extraordinary defensive performance Tuesday night in a 5-0 win over Aliso Niguel in the CIF-SS Division 2 semifinals at Aliso Niguel High.

It was just the fourth shutout in the history of the CIF-SS boys lacrosse playoffs and the first in the semifinals.

San Clemente’s defense was led by Colin Kohl, Colin Lederer, Sam LaMarre and Drake Laszewski. Goalie Jackson Blunt had three saves and San Clemente (14-6) allowed only 12 shots.

“All year they’ve been solid, lockdown, they are the core of our team,” San Clemente coach Brendan Finnerty said. “They keep us in every game. Teams don’t score on us. It’s that simple.”

It was the first time Aliso Niguel (17-4) was shut out since its inaugural season in 2008.

The two teams were co-champions of the South Coast League this season and split their two league contests. San Clemente beat Aliso Niguel 7-5 on March 27 and Aliso Niguel beat the Tritons 5-4 in overtime on April 15.

“We know them so well. We used the same game plan we did when we lost against them,” Finnerty said. “We had less turnovers, less mistakes and better IQ this time around.”

Junior attackman Grady Blunt led San Clemente with three goals. Jack Bunker and Landon Caster also scored for the Tritons and Trevor Ghyzel had two assists.

Aliso Niguel was excellent defensively in its own right and made it difficult for San Clemente to get clean shots. Goalie Irving Pincus had six saves and West Maxon forced multiple turnovers.

Aliso Niguel made back-to-back Division 2 championship appearances in 2022-23 and won the championship in 2022. The Wolverines began this season 1-2 and won 16 of their last 17 games entering Tuesday.

San Clemente will play undefeated Dos Pueblos of Santa Barbara in the championship game Saturday at El Modena High. The Tritons lost to Dos Pueblos 7-5 on April 11.

“These 17 seniors, almost all of them have been on varsity since sophomore year and they grind every year,” Finnerty said. “We saw them (Dos Pueblos) over spring break and it’s back to the drawing board tomorrow to see what we need to do differently.”

This will be the first CIF championship appearance for San Clemente.
