(KRON) — San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan says his proposed policies on homelessness are aligned with Gov. Gavin Newson’s recent model for banning camps at the city and county level.
Newson’s plan calls for a prohibition on camping in one spot or in areas that block public walkways. It also requires local officials to “make every reasonable effort” to offer shelter to homeless people before clearing camps.
Mahan’s “responsibility to shelter” plan, meanwhile, would allow authorities to arrest homeless people if they refuse shelter three times in 18 months.
“Our goal is to get everyone indoors, into shelter or treatment,” Mahan told KRON4.

So far, several council members are concerned about the toll the approach would take on city resources.
