Another multi-mile stretch of Weld County Road 77 is slated to close through October while crews begin work on the third phase of a project to improve 23 miles of the road from Briggsdale to the Hereford area.
The seven-mile stretch of Weld 77 — from Weld 106 to Weld 120 — will close Monday, May 19, according to a Weld County news release. A map of detours is available on the County Road Advisory Map.
As has been done in previous phases of the improvements, construction will start after the Pawnee School District’s graduation ceremony, and the stretch of road will temporarily reopen on Father’s Day weekend to accommodate traffic to and from the Earl Anderson Memorial Rodeo in Grover, according to the release. It will open at the end of the day Wednesday, June 11, and close again at 6 a.m. Monday, June 16.
The county said it has consulted with the Briggsdale Fire Protection District, Pawnee Fire Protection District, Weld County Sheriff’s Office, Pawnee School District RE-12 and area mail carriers to discuss details and ensure closures wouldn’t impede them doing their jobs.
“This road is a major artery for northern Weld County,” county commissioner Jason Maxey said. “I’ve received many questions about scheduling and access and I want to say thank you to the public works department for helping the community by answering those questions and for acknowledging important events, such as graduation and the rodeo.”
During the construction, crews will strengthen Weld 77 between Weld 106 and Weld 114, as well as replace a handful of culverts near Weld 120, the county said. It is the third phase of improvements made to Weld 77 from Colo. 14 in Briggsdale to Weld 136 in the Hereford area.
In 2023, crews completed similar work on the road from Colo. 14 to Weld 120. This past summer, the roadway from Weld 100 to 106 was replaced and several other improvements were made to the road as far north as Weld 120.
The five-plus month anticipated closure is slated to be the longest yet in the string of improvements, after 2023’s closure lasted under four months and last year’s lasted approximately five months.
The construction is funded in part by a $1 million grant from the Department of Local Affairs, but the county is paying for the other roughly $3.5 million out of the public works budget, according to the release.
