Vanguard University in Costa Mesa was awarded a $900,000 grant from In-N-Out Burger Foundation.

The money will go toward creating Headwind Scholars, a scholarship program for former foster youth providing financial aid, academic resources and support services.

“With this additional funding, and the support of others who are motivated to come alongside INOFB’s generosity, we are confident in the long-term impact we can make to partner, encourage, mentor, and guide these students throughout their academic careers,” said Michael J. Beals, president of Vanguard University.

Howard Booker, executive director of INOBF, said the company’s nonprofit arm is dedicated to supporting children who have faced abuse and neglect.

“This gift represents our vision of empowering students in a Christian college environment, enhancing resources for current and future foster care system graduates to thrive academically and beyond,” Booker said.

Mark Orphan is the newly appointed director of Headwind Scholars. Orphan, a Vanguard graduate and a pastor, is also the co-founder of the nonprofit Finally Home, which also works with foster youth and adoption advocacy.

Vanguard is a private, Christian university founded in 1920. It has 2,200 enrolled students and nearly 100 full-time faculty teaching 30 undergraduate programs and six graduate degree programs.
