David Beckham has been urged to wield the axe at Inter Miami after Lionel Messi reached uncharted territory in the MLS.
The ex-England captain has been busy expanding his ownership portfolio, but Javier Mascherano has caused a crisis at his first club.
Messi has never been on the pitch for a loss of three or more goals in the MLSGettyThe Manchester United legend will be anxiously watching the drama unfold in Miami following his team’s worrying run of form.
For the first time since Messi arrived in the summer of 2023, the Argentine was on the receiving end of a loss of three or more goals.
Despite scoring, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was powerless to prevent Miami from falling to a 4–1 defeat to Minnesota United.
It was the Herons’ fourth loss in their last five matches, a team previously unbeaten in Major League Soccer before April 27.
Mascherano is now on track to become the worst manager in Inter Miami history, with five defeats since taking official charge in January.
After Messi’s 44th goal in Miami pink briefly made it 2-1, his former Barcelona teammate stressed that Minnesota’s third strike was costly.
“The third goal killed us,” he said post-match.
“Unfortunately, it’s a tough defeat for us because, despite everything, we knew Minnesota could hurt us in this way—the way we had prepared for—and that’s what worries me the most.”
Mascherano’s side has now conceded 13 goals across their run of four losses in their past five games, including the four against Minnesota.
“When we analyse the game, I think Columbus outplayed us, and we still won. But both against Dallas and today, I don’t think we were outplayed. Our game plan was clear – to control the match and play in the opponent’s half,” Mascherano added.
Messi scored his 44th goal for Miami, but couldn’t prevent another defeatGetty Mascherano has endured a miserable spell in chargeGetty“If the players’ performance drops, the responsibility is entirely mine.
“There’s a coach, and if he doesn’t deliver what you want, it’s the coach’s responsibility.”
Miami fans certainly believe the responsibility rests on Mascherano’s shoulders, after urging Beckham to sack the 40-year-old.
One supporter wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Get rid of Mascherano before the Club World Cup, you still have time.”
Another added: “Mascherano is the worst coach I’ve ever seen, he ruins everything he touches.
“Thank you for ruining Messi’s last years in this sport.”
Beckham is facing increased calls to make a decision on his manager’s futureGettyA third posted: “Sack the coach and sign new defenders. You dishonour Messi every day! What the hell!”
One more claimed on Instagram: “If David Beckham and Jorge Mas don’t sack Mascherano after this game, it’s hard to believe they’re serious about building this club.
“Tata Martino was bad — but somehow, Mascherano is managing to outdo him.”
Miami remain in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 21 points but could slide further down the table depending on other results.
