Angel Reese and Magic Johnson have teamed up to launch a new financial literacy program for high school seniors.

The initiative aims to empower young students in Baltimore, Maryland, with essential money management skills, marking a significant step in both their missions to give back to their communities.

Reese was born and raised in the Mid-Atlantic state, before attending high school at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore.

She also played two seasons of college basketball for the Maryland Terrapins, before transferring to LSU in 2022.

The Chicago Sky star has maintained strong ties to her community and former high school.

In 2023, she donated $12,000 to support tuition for a student on the girls’ basketball team at St. Frances Academy, a gesture that was inspired by her own experience of receiving similar support.

The Angel C. Reese Foundation was also launched that year, and focuses on creating opportunities for girls and underrepresented communities through education, mentorship, and sports.

St. Frances Academy served as the foundation’s launch site, and remains central to its mission.

Johnson, meanwhile, has long been active in supporting under-served communities and has now joined forces with Reese to bring financial education to Baltimore classrooms.

The four-session Wealth Playbook program began last week at St. Frances Academy and in the first class, students learned about key financial topics such as budgeting, understanding credit, and basic money management skills.

“The room was filled with energy, knowledge, and purpose,” a joint statement from the organizers, shared on Instagram, read.

“Students learned about budgeting, credit, and how to take control of their financial futures.

“This isn’t just a program — it’s the start of a movement.”

Reese, a standout rookie in her first WNBA season with the Chicago Sky, has already made millions through her Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals in college.

One of the most famous faces in women’s sports, who recently extended an invitation to the legendary Michael Jordan, she brings a modern perspective on teaching money management to teenagers.

Johnson, a five-time NBA champion, has a net worth of $1.5billion that has been built over decades of joint venture partnerships.

According to Forbes, the majority of his fortune comes from a 60% ownership stake in life insurance company Equitrust, which has grown from $16bn in assets under management to $27bn since he took over in 2015.

Johnson also owns small ownership stakes in the NFL’s Washington Commanders, MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers, WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks and MLS team LAFC.

The two basketball stars had social media buzzing with their joint effort, as many fans praised their work on the eve of the new WNBA season.

“Absolutely love this!!! A win for the community,” one person said.

“This is actually really, really cool,” another wrote.

“I love it! Angel making moves with a legend,” a third responded.

Reese, who recently became a homeowner herself, will face Caitlin Clark‘s Indiana Fever in Chicago’s WNBA regular-season opener next Saturday.
