Jose Aldo has hung up his gloves after suffering defeat at UFC 315 on Saturday night.

The UFC Hall of Famer was beaten via unanimous decision by Aiemann Zahabi at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Aldo got off to a good start with some blistering boxing combinations, but the veteran began to slow down as the fight wore on.

In round three, the action ramped up as Aldo dropped Zahabi with a big knee, only for the Canadian to regain his composure, stuff Aldo’s takedown attempts, and finish strong with some heavy ground and pound.

A vicious flurry of elbows sliced open Aldo’s forehead as blood leaked onto the canvas, however, he was able to survive to hear the final bell.

In the end, there was a feeling that the decision could go either way, yet all three judges sided with Zahabi by a margin of 29-28.

After the result was read out, Aldo took off his gloves and announced his retirement during a candid post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier.

“Well, first of all, thank you to Dana [White], to Sean [Shelby], to Lorenzo [Fertitta] for everybody at the UFC for everything you have given me,” Aldo said through a translator.

“I don’t think I have it in me anymore.

“This was a very tough week, it wasn’t just about the cutting of the weight.”

Aldo couldn’t get down to the 136lbs bantamweight limit, resulting in the UFC making his farewell fight at featherweight.

“I felt there was so many things that happened,” he continued.

“It was very tough to go through all this. There was one point this week that I felt I didn’t have it anymore, I didn’t want to cut anymore.

“My body said no, and I just don’t think I have it anymore.

“I don’t want to go into war all the time and go through this.

“I just don’t have it in my heart anymore.

“I think this is the last time you are going to see me, I can’t do this anymore.”

It marks the end of a legendary career that included the longest reign as a featherweight champion in UFC history.

Aldo first became champion at 145lbs in the UFC’s sister promotion, the WEC, in 2009, and when that promotion and its roster were absorbed by the UFC the following year, he was named the company’s inaugural featherweight title holder.

He defended the belt 7 times and held on to it for a remarkable 1,848 days before running into Conor McGregor in 2015, who snapped Aldo’s 18-fight winning streak with a highlight reel 13-second knockout.

Aldo rebounded to overcome Frankie Edgar for the interim belt in 2016 and was subsequently promoted to undisputed champion when McGregor was stripped for inactivity later that year.

His second reign didn’t last nearly as long as his first, however, with Max Holloway snatching the belt from Aldo in his first defence.

Aldo initially retired in 2022 following a defeat to Merab Dvalishvili, but came back for three more fights, winning one and losing two.
