Liverpool have won the war with Arsenal in the Premier League title race, but Mikel Arteta’s men will be keen to triumph in this weekend’s battle at Anfield.

Arsenal are out of the Champions League and they have not yet confirmed their place in next season’s competition. Who will come out on top on Sunday?

Liverpool vs Arsenal predictions

They gave it their best shot, but Arsenal ultimately came up short in their bid to win the Champions League for the first time.

A 2-1 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final second leg on Wednesday saw the Gunners exit the competition 3-1 on aggregate.

Mikel Arteta argued afterwards that Arsenal were the better team over both legs. That is pushing it, but Arsenal definitely pushed PSG all the way.

Exiting with a narrow defeat in the last four cannot be termed a failure, particularly as this was Arsenal’s first semi-final appearance since 2008/09, when Arsene Wenger’s side were soundly beaten by Manchester United.

Arsenal’s performance in the Premier League has been more disappointing. Having finished second to Manchester City for two seasons on the bounce, Arteta’s men should have been in pole position to capitalise on City’s decline this term.

Instead, it is Liverpool who have benefitted. The Reds wrapped up the title last month having opened up a 15-point lead over Arsenal in second.

Rather than chasing down the team in top spot, Arsenal are now looking nervously over their shoulder at the sides behind them. Following a 2-1 home defeat by Bournemouth last weekend, Arsenal’s advantage over Manchester City in third has been trimmed to three points.

Nottingham Forest in sixth are six points behind Arsenal, so Champions League qualification for Arteta’s charges is not yet guaranteed. It would take a monumental collapse for the Gunners to fall out of the top five from here, but they do look vulnerable in second.

Arsenal have lost four games this season, just one more than Liverpool. The main difference between the two teams is that Liverpool have seven more wins and six fewer draws to their name than Arsenal.

The score has been level in 13 fixtures involving Arsenal, second only to Everton (15) in the Premier League. That is why they have not been able to keep pace with Liverpool.

Arne Slot’s team lost 3-1 to Chelsea last weekend. The Liverpool manager shuffled his pack for the trip to Stamford Bridge, and his team did not play with their usual intensity having secured the title a week earlier.

Liverpool will have rediscovered their focus ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Merseyside – and that is bad news for Arteta and co.

Liverpool to win

Having named a second-string midfield to face Chelsea last time out, Slot will revert to his first-choice XI this weekend.

Liverpool may have won the title already, but they will be keen to finish as far ahead of Arsenal and the rest of the chasing pack as possible.

The Reds can still break the 90-point barrier and that must be the objective in the final few weeks of the season.

Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final against PSG will have taken a lot out of them, from both a mental and physical perspective.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have had a full week to prepare for this match. They also have home advantage on their side.

Liverpool to win the second half

Liverpool have comfortably been the best team in the Premier League this season, although not so much in the opening 45 minutes.

Arsenal and Manchester City actually have better first-half records than Liverpool, who sit third in that particular ranking.

It is a different story after the break. Liverpool have been dominant in that portion of games throughout 2024/25.

Slot’s men have won a whopping 23 out of 35 second halves. For context, Arsenal and City are the next best on 15 apiece.

Liverpool seem to get stronger as time wears on. That is likely to be the case on Sunday, with Arsenal liable to tire after their midweek exertions.

Mohamed Salah to score any time

By his sky-high standards, Mohamed Salah has suffered a dip in form over the last few weeks.

The Egypt international has only scored one goal in his last eight outings for Liverpool across all competitions.

Salah is still on course to win the Golden Boot and it would be a shock if anyone was named PFA Player of the Year.

The Liverpool legend will be determined to rediscover his best form before the end of the campaign.

He needs two more league goals to reach 30 and we expect him to get at least one of those against Arsenal.
