COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The Ohio State University powerlifting club just made waves at nationals in April and received a bid to represent the United States at the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) University World Cup.

"90% of lifters don't ever get to compete even nationally, so to have an international bid as a university team, it's pretty unique," said Zihao Qing, former Ohio State powerlifting club secretary.

But in order to make their global journey happen, members said they need the community's help. The club's motto is 'built not bought', a reflection of building a community of strength and relationships that cannot be bought. While other universities offer scholarships and large grants to their powerlifting teams, the club is built on members that have chosen to join for fun.

"It's fun to build other people up and kind of play off of each other's strengths," said Rylee Slisher, former club member.

Seven men and five women will be going overseas in July to compete. Tyler Gould is one of those powerlifters.

"Being in Istanbul, that's really cool," Gould said. "I've never left the country before so this will be my first time, and just making memories. That's really what the club is all about, making memories and building those friendships."

Gould, along with his teammates, said he's looking for support to cover the travel, lodge and competition costs.

"Powerlifting is not recognized by the NCAA yet, so we're calling on the community because the school isn't offering any funds for us, so we all have to come up with the money on our own," Gould said. "It's looking like it's going to be around $3,000 per person."

The club is selling t-shirts to raise funds for the trip. To purchase one visit this link. If a shirt or donation is not tied to a specific athlete, the profits will be pooled and evenly distributed among all of the athletes being sent to University Worlds.
