The community can donate to a fundraiser to support a Mead man who lost his 57-year-old wife in an April 30 vehicle collision on U.S. 85, near Platteville.
In the afternoon of April 30, a northbound GMC Yukon on U.S. 85, fleeing from police, crossed the center median into the southbound lanes, colliding head-on with a Toyota 4Runner.
The Toyota 4Runner’s driver, Christine Ann Schwarz, 57, of Mead, and the two people inside the GMC Yukon, died from the impact after both vehicles caught fire.
The fundraiser creator, Sabrina Flanagan, shared that she met Chris Schwarz, Christine’s husband, on May 3, a few days after her death, according to the GoFundMe description.
The two started up a conversation, quickly discovering they lived just a street apart. Chris then mentioned his wife had passed away.
Flanagan knew exactly who she was — an “extraordinary soul” and beloved seventh grade teacher at North Valley Middle School in LaSalle.
Chris revealed he went looking for Christine when he couldn’t reach her on April 30. He ended up coming upon the collision scene, discovering she had been involved in the fatal tragedy.
“In the midst of his own shock and grief, Chris’s first instinct was to call her school principal — not for himself, but out of concern for her students,” Flanagan said in the GoFundMe description. “Because Christine wasn’t just a teacher — she was a beacon of love, support, and inspiration to every child she taught.”
Flanagan asks people to donate what they can to help Chris, who will incur expenses to plan a celebration of life, in addition to everyday costs like a mortgage.
“Together, we can help lift just a small part of the weight Chris is carrying,” Flanagan wrote in the GoFundMe. “Let’s show him, and the world, how deeply Christine was — and still is — loved.”
As of Saturday afternoon, the GoFundMe has nearly 90 donations, approaching $8,000 out of a $25,000 goal.
