Beat Running Lion at Haydock in listed company on seasonal debut in May which is great form to kick off her four-year-old campaign.
She’s won three of her five runs and is still quite unexposed for Charlie Appleby.
Jockey William Buick has been on board throughout her career so can guide her expertly again.
Vintage Clarets
Tipped this horse last time out to win at Epsom and though he didn’t win was pressing for the lead before just dropping away but for a respectable 5th of 19.
Down another 2lb for today’s race with Will Fentiman on board once again taking his 5lb claim.
Has won over course and distance including this race in 2023 so is in a great position to win again.
Secret Oath
Interesting to see William Buick go for the Newcastle mount instead of Newmarket’s Secret Oath, who cost 550,000euros as a yearling.
Trained by Charlie Appleby and owned by Godolphin this Lope De Vega filly has a great pedigree and her second on debut was encouraging too.
Zelaina, who won that race, has since gone on to place 8th in the Group 2 fillies Queen Mary Stakes which was a solid run just three lengths off the winner.
She does come up against another expensive filly, Butterfly Beach, who’s unraced and trained by Ed Walker.
Both Walker and jockey Kieran Shoemark have had four winners in the last two weeks for 10% and 13% strike-rates respectively.
But Appleby often does well at Newmarket and she does have solid form to back her potential up too.
Mood Queen would be my second option over the unknown, the debutante, as Mood Queen wasn’t far off Nandita on debut.
She too went into a group race at Royal Ascot and wasn’t disgraced with a midfield place.
That said, Appleby at Newmarket is always a dangerous combination – he got one yesterday too and is the smart option for sure.
Lakers
Was 4/6 favourite at Beverley in July 2024 but was beaten by Lazy Griff, owned by Middleham Park.
That form has worked out incredibly since then with that colt now being rated 114.
Going on to win a Group 3 at Chantilly in September, then placing 2nd behind Lambourn twice in the Derby at Epsom and the Chester Vase.
Lakers has had one run since then, where something clearly wasn’t right as he was sent off for a wind op a month later and then even gelded in May of this year.
Could come back on this potentially low weight in comparison to where he is and he’s had plenty of time to settle in since the wind op which can also be a bit of a plus.
Hammered in from 6/1 and that price may shorten further throughout the day.
