Sai Sudharsan is emerging as the front-runner to replace Rohit Sharma as the India cricket team’s Test opener. The southpaw has been rising through the ranks for some time now. Sudharsan has already made his international debut in 2023 and has white-ball caps to his name.
BCCI interested in Sai Sudharsan
He’s been moving closer and closer towards making that Test debut as well. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had selected Sudharsan for India A last year, and he’d scored a hundred against Australia A. However, the Indian management didn’t trust him enough back then and played Devdutt Padikkal over him.
However, now things have changed now. With Rohit retiring from Test cricket, the second opener slot is opened up. According to PTI, Sudharsan has made a good impression on BCCI. There was already talk about him being the backup opener to Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
But with Rohit out of the picture, Sudharsan seems to be a top favourite for the opener role. But since tested players like Shubman Gill and KL Rahul are present in the team, there might be a chance that they are preferred over Sudharsan. However, if he doesn’t open, the southpaw can be slotted at number three.
Ready for England?
Sudharsan couldn’t play the entire Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season but still managed to average 76 in 3 matches and scored a double hundred against Delhi. Unlike the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan or Nitish Kumar Reddy, Sudharsan has experience of playing in England as well. For two years, he played in the County Championship for Kent. If someone has to be thrown in, Sudharsan might be the best bet.
