COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Motorists taking a road trip in the Buckeye State have the benefit of being able to pull over at dozens of rest areas, which offer multiple amenities, including modern bathrooms.
According to a new study, one of Ohio's stops ranks among the best in the United States. The American River Wellness Recovery Company recently surveyed 3,017 drivers and truckers to determine their priorities on the road. Using that data, they ranked the best public restrooms in each state.
The spot in Ohio that made American River Wellness's list of the best facilities in the U.S. is listed as the “Jeffersonville Welcome Center,” located on I-71 between Cincinnati and Columbus. However, the Ohio Department of Transportation, which builds and maintains the State's rest stops, refers to it as the Fayette I-71 Rest Area, with northbound and southbound locations at 4400 I-71, Jeffersonville, Ohio 43128 and 4101 I-71, Jeffersonville, Ohio 43128, respectively.
ODOT's website notes the Fayette northbound and southbound rest stops offer vending, family restrooms, drinking water, Storybook trails and universal changing stations. Both have spaces for 30 cars to park and at least a dozen truck-parking spaces.
Additionally, the I-71 rest area is part of Ohio's reimagined welcome center plan. In 2023, the State rolled out its goal of replacing 33 rest area buildings over four years. ODOT's website indicates the Fayette buildings were updated in 2024.
“Our rest stops give travelers, truck drivers, and families a safe place to rest, which can increase focus and safety when they get back on the road,” Gov. Mike DeWine said in an ODOT news release. “While they’re stretching their legs, we want to share Ohio’s amazing story, and tell them about our innovative Ohioans, beautiful natural resources, and exciting attractions. We want them to know Ohio is full of great opportunity!”
