The Wolfpack took the early lead thanks to wins on No. 1 and No. 2 court in doubles. It was just the second time in 30 matches this season that the Tar Heels had lost the doubles point.
The match then shifted to singles, with Carolina needing wins on four of six courts to save its season. Thea Rabman got the Tar Heels off to a good start, winning 6-3, 6-2 on No. 2 court to give UNC its first point. Reese Brantmeier followed up with a straight-sets win of her own on No. 1 court shortly after, beating the Wolfpack’s Anna Zyryanova 6-2, 7-5. On No. 5 court, Carson Tanguilig finished off a 6-4, 6-4 win to put UNC ahead 3-1, one point away from victory.
NC State’s Gabia Paskauskas defeated UNC’s Claire Hill on No. 6 court 6-4, 6-1 to draw the match to within 3-2, but Alanis Hamilton would win the deciding match on No. 4, overcoming a first-set defeat 2-6, 7-6, 6-4. The only match left unfinished was on No. 3 court, where UNC’s Tatum Evans led decisively in the third set.
The win is Carolina’s 11th in a row and third against NC State this season. The Tar Heels are now 26-4 overall and will face No. 13 overall seed LSU in the quarterfinals, which begin May 15.
