Plowshares in Ukiah is preparing for its 4th Annual BBQ-On-Wheels dinner, a drive-through fundraiser supporting the Senior Meals-On-Wheels Program.
This event is next Saturday, May 17, from 4-6:30 p.m. at 1346 S. State St., catered by Big Earl’s BBQ and The Ukiah Redwood Empire Lions Club. It is sponsored by the Harold and Vivienne Henderson Family Fund.
Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased through Plowshares’ website at: www.plowsharesfeeds.org or by calling the Plowshares office at 707-462-8582, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Plowshares volunteers help package and distribute food at a previous drive-through dinner fundraiser. (Contributed)BBQ-On-Wheels Dinner tickets are available now. The BBQ dinners are plenty for a family of 4-plus. The meals include your choice of Earl’s Whole Juicy Tri-Tip, four of Earl’s Famous Jumbo Chicken Leg Quarters, or “The Works,” which features both the Tri-Tip and Chicken. Plus Earl’s Chunky Red Skin Potato Salad, Fresh Green Salad, Garlic Bread, and a pan of Delicious Fudge Brownies.
There is also an option to add on a Family Mac & Cheese. A vegetarian option will also be available. All proceeds will benefit the Senior Meals-On-Wheels program.
The event supports the community’s Senior Meals-On-Wheels program. This program delivers free, nutritious, freshly prepared meals to the homes of over 220 disabled, home-bound seniors. Plowshares provides meals to these seniors seven days a week, for a total of more than 73,000 meals a year.
Michelle Shaw, Executive Director of Plowshares, says, “Our meals consist of proteins, carbohydrates, and vegetables. We also provide fruits, fresh green salads, bread, treats, and a weekly quart of milk with those meals.”
“The value of our Senior Meals-On-Wheels program goes far beyond the nutritious food we supply. Visits from the friendly volunteers are sometimes the only human contact our local seniors receive during the day,” Shaw said. “Some of them have told us, ‘You’re the reason I get up and get dressed each morning!’ Or ‘I don’t know how I’d get by without your help!’
“These welfare checks by our beautiful volunteers help seniors safely remain in their homes as long as possible, saving significant care-home costs to families and increasing comfort and convenience for our seniors,” Shaw continued. “We do not charge our seniors for this service. We depend on community support to keep this local program going.”
Earl Chavez, the owner of Big Earl’s BBQ, added, “I’m thrilled to partner with Plowshares, and I’m looking forward to making a positive difference in the community. It’s amazing to be part of an organization dedicated to making a difference in our seniors’ lives, and I’m excited to be a part of it!”
“One hundred percent of the profit from this event goes towards our Senior Meal-on-Wheels Program,” Shaw said. “We cannot do what we do without the loving support from our community.”
