The Expert Edit features interviews with specialists about the products they swear by in their chosen field. For the latest installment, we spoke to makeup artist Chelsea Uchenna about her beauty product recommendations and must haves while she's on set.

Although the beauty industry has a long way to go in terms of diversity, there are changemakers that are successfully making strides for the BIPOC community. In makeup, major figures like Pat McGrath easily come to mind, but there's one disruptor who's commanded our attention just as much: Chelsea Uchenna. You may know her as "Makeup by Chelsea" from her innovative makeup transformation videos and glam breakdowns on TikTok, along with the work she's done for stars such as Ayra Starr, Saweetie, and Leomie Anderson.

"Being as versatile as you can is so important in this industry. Even me, being where I am now, I'm still practicing and still learning."

While any glam that Uchenna does is stellar, her recent work on Doechii exhibits her talent in an unparalleled way. The London makeup artist started working with the "Swamp Princess" earlier this year, and has created a host of awe-inspiring beauty looks ever since - including Doechii's smokey eyes for Tom Ford's show during Paris Fashion Week. "I'm fond of everyone I work with, so it's this moment where I'm like, 'Wow, this is actually cool that we get to work together,'" Uchenna says of her work with the artist. Most recently, the pair continued their journey to worldwide domination with one of the most iconic beauty moments in modern history: the branded Louis Vuitton logo stamped onto the rapper's glam at the 2025 Met Gala - a moment marking their debut at the monumental event.

While Uchenna's artistry has granted her well-deserved access into the industry's biggest rooms, her first-class work is a result of passion for makeup that started long before she reached Fashion Week. In fact, she started playing in her mom's makeup at just 12 years old (although she wasn't allowed). "I would do little mini looks using my mum's makeup and post it on Snapchat," she says. "I would do it before she came back from work, and I remember somebody messaged me asking for me to replicate a look on them, and that was my first client." Little did Uchenna know, this casual hobby would establish the foundation for the makeup maverick she's become today.

Although she's amassed an impressive résumé, Uchenna prides herself on being humble and remaining a student. "Don't box yourself in or be afraid to try new things. Being as versatile as you can is so important in this industry. Even me, being where I am now, I'm still practicing and still learning," she says.

With this mindset, the beauty genius has clearly come far, but apart from the major red carpets and jet-setting moments, there's one feat that she's most proud of: hosting a masterclass. "I had a masterclass last October, and it was incredible for me and my journey because I consider myself a beauty content creator, but also a beauty educator," she says. "With everything that I learn, I always want to pass it on, so being able to host a sold-out event where everyone is like-minded with aspirations in beauty was amazing. I've looked up to people like Danessa Myricks and Makeup by Mario, who host masterclasses, and I told myself I would do that one day. And I did."

Ahead, Uchenna shares her top beauty recommendations and must-have makeup products, including her favorite setting spray for summer and the highlighter she repeatedly uses on Doechii.
