THE TSA has warned passengers of the seven items that are prohibited from checked luggage after a new ban was brought in earlier this year.
This reminder comes as airports across the country experience security delays due to the introduction of the Real ID screening process.

Officials explained that portable chargers and power banks for phones are not allowed in the plane cabin’s hold and will be confiscated.
These restrictions on portable chargers and power banks are being introduced because of the risk of fire from overheating devices, according to the TSA.
In January 2025, a fire on Air Busan Flight 391 in South Korea, in which at least seven people were injured, was thought to have been caused by a power bank.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) offered advice on the new banned items. Here’s the full list of banned items.
What items are not allowed by the TSA?
According to the FAA, portable chargers and power banks with lithium-ion batteries are only allowed in carry-on bags now, which means you can’t pack them in checked luggage anymore.
The items are:
Power banks Cellphone battery charging cases Rechargeable and non-rechargeable lithium batteries Cellphone batteries Laptop batteries External batteries Portable rechargersIn a statement, the FAA said: “Spare (uninstalled) lithium ion and lithium metal batteries, including power banks and cell phone battery charging cases, must be carried in carry-on baggage only.
“When a carry-on bag is checked at the gate or at planeside, all spare lithium batteries and power banks must be removed from the bag and kept with the passenger in the aircraft cabin.
“The battery terminals must be protected from short circuit.”
According to the FAA, this rule also covers “spare lithium metal and spare rechargeable lithium ion batteries for personal electronics”.
These electronics include cameras, cell phones, laptop computers, tablets, watches, and calculators.
“This also includes external battery chargers (portable rechargers) containing a lithium ion battery,” the FAA explained.
“For lithium batteries that are installed in a device (laptop, cell phone, camera, etc.), see the entry for ‘portable electronic devices, containing batteries’.”
In November 2024, a Southwest flight leaving Denver was forced to evacuate after a passenger’s cell phone caught fire.
In April 2024, another Southwest flight heading to Miami was forced to land in Palm Beach after crew members noticed an overheated cell phone emitting smoke.
In 2020, the FAA banned spare, uninstalled lithium-ion metal batteries from checked-in luggage in 2020.

Passengers may carry up to two spare larger batteries with a rating between 101- to 160-watt hours.
This includes extended-life laptop batteries and some batteries used in professional audio-visual equipment.
All batteries must be for personal use and not for sale or distribution.
When a portable charger or power bank overheats this is known as a thermal runaway.
This happens when the battery cell uncontrollably increases in temperature without warning.
According to the FAA, thermal runaway can happen if the battery is damaged, overheated, exposed to water, overcharged, improperly packed, or because of manufacturing defects.
Flight crews are trained to recognize and respond to battery fires when one occurs in an airplane cabin.
The FAA advises passengers to notify flight crew immediately if they have a battery or device that’s overheating, expanding, smoking, or burning during a flight.
Any batteries travelers fly with must be protected from damage and short-circuit, according to the FAA.

Theses changes were highlighted as the new Real ID rule went into effect on May 7, 2025.
As a result, all US residents now need to show a Real ID-compliant form of ID to board domestic flights.
If an adult doesn’t have one, they’ll go through additional security screening at the airport.
Kristi Noem, who leads the US Department of Homeland Security, clarified that even though the updated ID system is in place, travelers without a Real ID can still fly, for now.
However, they may face extra scrutiny at TSA checkpoints.
Noem reported that 81% of travelers already have IDs that comply with the Real ID requirements.
Those that don’t “may be diverted to a different line, have an extra step” during the screening process.
