CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Mint Hill man is charged in connection with a disturbing video showing an opossum being burned alive.

According to court documents, 30-year-old Cameron Torrence was arrested on Thursday, May 9, and charged with misdemeanor instigating cruelty to animals. He is also charged with failure to appear for flee/elude arrest with a moving vehicle and a probation violation.

Torrence has yet to be given bond and remains at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.

This arrest comes a week after authorities said they had identified persons of interest and that felony charges were expected. Reportedly, three people were involved in the incident.

Queen City News has chosen not to show the video in which an opossum can be seen being doused in lighter fluid and set on fire. The now-viral video was posted on multiple accounts on April 24, prompting an investigation led by the North Carolina Wildlife Commission.

A $5,000 reward is being offered by the Animal Wellness Action and Center for a Humane Economy for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. However, the Charlotte Crime Stoppers says they do not need any more tips and have enough information to move forward with the case.
