Stephen Curry was never built to be the next Michael Jordan or LeBron James.
Which makes his four NBA championships, 11 All-Star selections, Olympic gold medal and all-time basketball records even more remarkable.
Stephen Curry has become an all-time great despite battling constant injuriesGettyAir Jordan stood 6ft 6in and hit the game-winning shot in the NCAA Tournament.
James was the Chosen One in high school, then became The King of The Association.
His 6ft 9in and 250lb frame was so unstoppable in the open court early in his career that the league’s all-time leading scorer was glowingly compared to a locomotive train.
Curry is listed at 6ft 2in – and that might be with rounding up – weighs 65lb less than James, and was still being doubted four years into his NBA career.
His injuries often seem endless: ligament tears in his leg, a broken hand, MCL sprain, ankle and foot problems.
The latest blow could end the Warriors’ season and directly led to a 24-point blowout defeat to Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 2 of a Western Conference semifinals series.
“This is new, and from all that I’m learning about how quickly you can get back, there has to be a healing process,” said Curry, after suffering a painful hamstring injury that will keep him off the court for at least a week.
“You can’t accelerate it more than what it’s telling you. So it’ll be one of those, after a week, really re-evaluating every day to understand when it’s safe just to even think about playing, let alone how much can you push it.”
Some NBA superstars make $50 million a year while their daily commitment to their team and its fanbase is constantly questioned.
Start with Joel Embiid and go down the list.
Curry is expected to miss at least a week with a hamstring injuryGetty LeBron James weighs 65lb more than CurryGettyCurry, 37, has spent year after year fighting off injuries that already could have ended his career.
Last summer, he chose Olympic gold with Team USA over much-needed rest, co-starring with James in Paris while Embiid barely made a dent on the court.
“I’ve been blessed to play basketball at a high level for a very long time,” Curry said in a Netflix documentary.
“This ranks very high in terms of excitement and the sense of relief, getting to the finish line.”
The greatest shooter in NBA history beat the Rockets again in the playoffs in the first round.
But Curry has played in 1,181 combined regular and postseason games, and there’s only so much that his relatively small frame can take.
In normal life, a 6-2 Curry would stand out in an elevator or crowded room.
In the NBA, Curry must create space all over the court by bouncing away from defenders or delicately carving his way through the lane.
“Maybe he’s starting to break down. He moves a lot for a 37 year-old,” Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal said on Inside the NBA.
The Warriors were shattered in Game 2 without Curry, and they’re nothing without him in the playoffs.
“We have to figure out what we’re going to be able to do in this series without Steph,” Golden State head coach Steve Kerr said.
Curry is constantly injured, but no one doubts his commitment to the Warriors or his dedication in returning to the hardwood as soon as humanly possible.
That’s why a lightweight 6-2 guard from Davidson with iffy ankles will be remembered for decades to come as the greatest shooter that the world has ever seen.
