It’s the final day of Chester’s May Festival and what a day it promises to be, with racing kicking off at 1.30 and finishing at 4.45.
The highlights of the day include the group two Huxley Stakes (2.35) and the Chester Cup (3.05), which is one of the big staying handicaps of the year.
Our man Lee Sharp has looked through the card and picked out three bets, including one in the Chester Cup.

Friday’s Chester racing tips
1.30 Chester – Divine Libra @ 4/1 2.35 Chester – The Foxes @ 11/8 3.05 Chester – East India Dock @ 7/21.30 Chester – Divine Libra @ 4/1
Charlie Hills’ five-year-old Divine Libra won at this meeting last year and looks to hold strong claims once again in a race that’s just half a furlong longer than the one he landed 12 months ago.
He clearly has a real liking for this track, with two wins, a second and a third from five starts at Chester, while the booking of Ryan Moore is a big positive – nobody rides the Roodee better than he does.
Divine Libra has had just the one run this season, finishing sixth but only two lengths behind the winner at Haydock last month. He’ll be sharper for that outing and looks poised to bounce back at a course that plays to his strengths.
2.35 Chester – The Foxes @ 11/8
The Andrew Balding-trained The Foxes looks to have a great chance in the Group Two Huxley Stakes
The Foxes was last seen in the UK beating Dubai Honour impressively in a Listed contest at Newcastle, before embarking on a couple of away days to Hong Kong and Qatar, where he contested some of the most valuable races in the world.
While he didn’t manage to win either, he ran with great credit on both occasions, finishing not far behind top-class performers such as Rebel’s Romance and Romantic Warrior.
He’s already achieved plenty and there’s a strong sense that this could be the season he makes the breakthrough at Group One level.
It is 80 days since that run in Qatar, so he’s had time for a mini break and a chance to regroup, which could be ominous for his rivals.
3.05 Chester – East India Dock @ 7/2
Last year’s Chester Cup winner Zoffee returns to defend his crown, this time partnered by 3lb claimer Joe Leavy.
Harry Davies, who rode him to victory last year, has since developed a partnership with James Owen and takes the ride on East India Dock.
Better known more recently for his exploits over jumps – finishing third in the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival – East India Dock was a very progressive flat performer last season, improving his mark by 24lb over the campaign.
He was last seen on the flat finishing fourth in a competitive handicap over a mile and six furlongs at Doncaster in September.
We know he stays this trip and it’s likely that his time over hurdles has helped him improve further.
Off a mark of 89, he could now be even better on the flat. Several dual-purpose horses have won this race in the past and East India Dock could well be the next to add his name to that list.
