Chad Ochocinco Johnson isn’t giving up on George Pickens.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have appeared to have run out of patience with Pickens as they sent the 24-year-old to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.
Ochocinco passionately defended Pickens@NightcapShow_Ochocinco issued a passionate defence of the wide receiver, whose three seasons in the NFL have been mixed with highlight-reel catches and immaturity.
Ochocinco is known to be Pickens’ mentor, and he is confident his arrival in Dallas will be transformational for him and the franchise.
“You just made Dallas better,” he said on NightCap as he dismissed the benefit of the move for the Steelers.
“A lot of people might not understand how good George Pickens actually is. He needs this, he needed to change the scenery and not only did he get to change the scenery, he went to America’s team.
“Dak Prescott has to be thanking the football gods for this addition to his offence. It makes him better, especially in NFC East.”
As Ochocinco kept on discussing the potential impact that Pickens will have on the Cowboys, he ended up leaving his co-host Shannon Sharpe stunned when he made a bold prediction about the Cowboys prospects for next season.
“All my Eagles fans, you know, I love you. No disrespect to the Commanders either I love y’all, but don’t be shocked if the goddamn Cowboys win the NFC East,” he said.
“I will be shocked,” Sharpe replied as he brushed off Ochocinco’s prediction before giving his opinion on Pickens.
“I’ve been telling Ocho this since we had NightCap, I said it’s called production and tolerance, and as long as production is here, tolerance will be here.
“Tolerance will never supersede production. I said their team will tolerate you until they can replace you.”
Pickens has proven to be a talented yet troubled starGetty Mike Tomlin would often defend PickensGETTYDespite Pickens being one of the most talented receivers in the NFL, it seems the Steelers just didn’t have enough tolerance for him.
It was only in 2023, he led the league by averaging 18.1 yards per catch in 2023.
In 48 games, he has 174 receptions for 2,841 yards and 12 scores.
However, with numerous flashpoints in which he’s struggled to keep his emotions in check, the Steelers have moved on.
Last season, he twice ended games by getting into altercations with the opposing defensive back.
First, when he grabbed Dallas’ Jourdan Lewis by the facemask and second when he tussled with Cleveland’s Greg Newsome II instead of getting into position for a Hail Mary.
Last year, Pickens was fined for using an expletive on his eye black against the Cowboys, while in 2023 he was heavily criticised for his inattentive downfield blocking for his teammates.
When DK Metcalf arrived at the Steelers in March and signed a five-year deal, and no contract extension being discussed with Pickens, the writing appeared to be on the wall.
Although for some, his arrival in Dallas will be welcomed, as he joins a Cowboys offence that needs another downfield threat to pair with CeeDee Lamb.
In 2024, their second-leading pass catcher behind Lamb was tight end Jake Ferguson, and you’d expect Pickens to make an instant impact in that regard.
