From one great opener to another! Virender Sehwag has congratulated former Indian Test captain Rohit Sharma for having an amazing red-ball career. In what came as a huge surprise on May 7, Rohit announced his retirement from the format with a subtle Instagram story. With this, Sehwag feels that Rohit did well to end his career on his own terms despite leaving a void of not being able to play 100 Test matches, an achievement that has only been fulfilled by 14 Indians.

While speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag reiterated that India would definitely miss Rohit Sharma’s presence at the top of the order. Sehwag, who himself played 103 Tests for the nation, would’ve loved to see Rohit go near the century mark but is “fine” in whatever Rohit managed to achieve in his “massive” career.
“Yes, there’s always that feeling – he could have played a bit longer. He could have reached 100 Test matches, and only a few elite players have achieved that milestone. But he’s made his decision, and that’s fine. His career has been absolutely brilliant.”
Also, Sehwag shared that he was taken by a surprise – like many others – with this decision, especially after what Rohit said after dropping himself in the last BGT Test in Sydney.
“It’s amazing, because I had also heard those things – like how he was preparing for the England tour or during the Australia tour when he didn’t play the last Test match, he was saying, “I’m not going anywhere. I’m right here. Don’t pretend like I’ve retired, ” Sehwag continued.

Fascinatingly, Sehwag also touched upon the fact that selectors might not have wanted Rohit in the England series. This could’ve prompted the Hitman to call it quits. Rohit had a horrible BGT series earlier this year that casted a shadow on his already tumbling Test career. Rohit didn’t look like in his groove. Despite taking Team India to a Champions Trophy win, the BCCI selectors weren’t keen on Rohit as they wanted fresh blood to lead in the upcoming WTC cycle. The management was looking at sacking Rohit!
“But what might have happened during this time? What happened is probably this: when the selectors made their decision – maybe they thought, “We won’t announce Rohit Sharma as the Test captain,” or perhaps, “We won’t even take him as a player” for the England tour. I’m sure the selectors would have spoken to him, told him what they were thinking, and then offered him some options.”
“That’s why, before the team was announced – before anything else was made public – Rohit Sharma announced his retirement. That’s a good sign,” said Sehwag.
“But who wouldn’t miss a player like Rohit Sharma? Whether it’s Test cricket, ODI cricket, or T20 cricket, he always provided full entertainment. Fans enjoyed watching his batting, and the records he’s made are outstanding. He has no regrets. He started in the middle order and retired as an opener. His achievements are massive. So I’d say-thank you, Rohit, for your service, and all the best for the future,” Sehwag added.
