Urban Meyer suggested Wednesday, via the The Triple Option podcast, that any head coach caught lying to the NCAA should be banned for life from Division I.
According to FootballScoop, Meyer referenced Dez Bryant’s 2009 case where he was caught lying about his relationship with now Colorado head coach Deion Sanders. Bryant lied about his relationship with Sanders after the NCAA insisted that Sanders had brought an NFL agent to dinner with he and Bryant at Sanders’ house.
Meyer’s argument insists that because Brant’s college career was ended by lying, head coaches at the college level should be banned for lying as well.
“If you lie, as a college football coach, to the NCAA – in my personal opinion – you are finished. You are done,” Meyer said.

— The Triple Option (@3xOptionShow) May 7, 2025Plenty of commenters voiced the irony of the statement coming from Urban Meyer, who has had his share of controversy over the years as head coach of both Florida and Ohio State – being accused of lying multiple times both on and off the field.
Not to mention, college football coaches across the country have hardly been perfect examples of candor throughout the years – whether it be controversial news stories or minor recruiting infractions being kept from the NCAA.
