Ajinkya Rahane and Co., with a defeat in the KKR vs CSK game, are out of the IPL 2025 playoffs race.

Rahane, Russell fire but KKR fizzle out

Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and opted to bat first. Rahmanullah Gurbaz departed early, but Rahane and Sunil Narine took charge in the powerplay. The hosts smashed 67/1 in the first 6 overs, with the KKR skipper taking on pace. MS Dhoni soon clawed the game back in his side’s favour with a spin choke.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja bowled economical overs on either side of Noor Ahmad’s double-wicket over. Jadeja then dismissed Ajinkya Rahane to turn the game on its head. Manish Pandey and Andre Russell rebuilt the innings, with the latter threatening to take the game away from the visitors. Noor however trumped once again, dismissing the West Indian for 38. The Afghan spinner jumped to the top of the Purple Cap race with 20 wickets after his 4-fer.

Manish Pandey and Ramandeep Singh could not get the finish they were looking for, finishing with a slightly under-par 179. However, with turn on offer and no dew, KKR were in the game.

Urvil, Brevis stun KKR

Vaibhav Arora struck first blood with in-form Ayush Mhatre out for a duck. However, Urvil Patel took the attack with a fine show of hitting, smashing a quick-fire 31. The visitors, however kept losing wickets in the powerplay, despite runs flowing at pace. CSK scored 62, their highest score in the powerplay, but lost half their side in the process.

Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis began rebuilding, with the latter counter-attacking in fine fashion. While Dube played anchor, Brevis played his shots, finding the boundary at ease. Vaibhav Arora bore the brunt of the South African’s assault, conceding 30 in the 11th over.

Brevis also reached his half-century, his first in IPL cricket. However, Varun Chakravarthy got the better of the South African for his second of the game. Dube and MS Dhoni took the game deep given the duo were the last recognized pair at the crease.

While the CSK skipper knocked it around, Dube assumed responsibility and hit a few maximums to keep the asking rate within reach. With 18 to win in 12, Dube smashed Arora for a six before being dismissed for 45. Noor was also dismissed of the last ball of the 19th, leaving CSK needing 8 off the last.

Dhoni put those concerns to rest with a six off Andre Russell with the first ball of the last over. He got the scores tied with a single, leaving Anshul Kamboj to finish the job, who smashed a boundary to seal a 2-wicket win.

The loss in the KKR vs CSK game knocks the defending champions out of the competition. Rahane and Co have 5 wins in 12 games, and can get to a maximum of 15 points. Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru already have 16 to their name, while Punjab Kings have 15 points.
