Idaho State beats Northern Colorado softball as rain pound Big Sky Conference Tournament in Greeley ...Saudi Arabia

Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

The Northern Colorado softball team’s long day at the Big Sky Conference Tournament ended near midnight Thursday as inclement weather continued to plague the postseason event on the first full day of games at Gloria Rodriguez Field in Greeley.

Top-seeded Idaho State beat the Bears 10-2 in five innings Wednesday night, sending No. 4 UNC into the tournament losers’ bracket with the third lopsided win in four games between the teams this spring.

Idaho State (35-15) swept UNC in three games during the regular season with two of those victories also on a run rule, meaning the Bengals led by at least eight runs after five full innings.

Wednesday’s tournament game, originally slated to start at 3 p.m., didn’t begin until about 8 p.m. because of a 4-hour weather delay in the previous game between No. 3 Weber State and No. 6 Montana. Weber State won 9-1 to advance to the winners’ bracket.

The game started after UNC and Portland State resumed and finished their game postponed from Tuesday. The teams returned to the field at 10 a.m. Wednesday, and the Bears needed about an hour to win 7-5 and advance to face Idaho State.

Against the Bengals, Ella Gonzales homered for UNC in the top of the first inning Wednesday night. Idaho State scored in the next four innings to build a big lead. UNC committed four errors — second highest single-game total this season — leading to four Idaho State unearned runs. The game was delayed in the fourth with ISU leading 5-2.

Mother Nature has been a problem for the Big Sky Conference this week.

The original opening day Tuesday of the six-team, four-day, double-elimination was postponed by rain and lightning. Four games were scheduled Tuesday, but only UNC and Portland State in the opener played any innings before the games were called.

poned games Tuesday led to a revised scheduled for Wednesday, but the weather failed to cooperate again with rain and lightning creating the long delay during the Montana-Weber State game.

The tournament schedule will be revised for Thursday.

Second-seeded Sacramento State had yet to play its first game as of late Wednesday night. The Hornets were scheduled to meet Weber State on Wednesday evening after UNC and Idaho State.

Sacramento State and Weber State are scheduled to play at 10 a.m. Thursday in the first game of the day. UNC (17-29) is scheduled to play Montana at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in an elimination game.

Portland State will face the Sacramento State-Weber State loser at 3 p.m. Thursday in an elimination game.

The Sacramento State-Weber State winner meets Idaho State at 5:30 p.m. Thursday with a chance to advance to Saturday’s final.

The weather forecast predicts brighter and drier days ahead starting Thursday. High temperatures are predicted for the upper 70s with sun in the morning and clouds in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The service says Friday and Saturday will be sunny with high temperatures in the low 80s Friday and into the mid 80s Saturday.
