King Charles III and Prince Harry face an uphill — and potential impossible – battle in ever reaching a reconciliation amid their ongoing years-long feud. The father-son rift arguably hit an all-time low last week, when Harry said in a BBC News interview that cancer-stricken Charles, 76, “won’t speak with me,” adding “I don’t know how much longer my father has.”
“The royal family [doesn’t] trust Harry anymore,” a royal insider exclusively tells Us Weekly. “So the whole institution is concerned that if Charles reaches out any conversations and information would be splashed across the American press.”
Harry’s interview came after his landmark loss in the duke’s ongoing battle for security in the U.K. Harry and wife Meghan Markle’s government-funded protection was removed after they departed from the royal family in 2020 and moved to the United States. During the BBC sitdown, Harry shared that his father could have affected the issue’s outcome.
The source explains that Harry, 40, “broke the cardinal Royal family rule” which is to “never explain and never complain” after he wrote his memoir Spare, filmed his Netflix documentary with Meghan, 43, and has given several tell-all interviews — including Harry’s recent sitdown with BBC. The insider adds that Harry’s decision to speak out was “risky,” reminding many of his late mother Princess Diana, who similarly laid bare her personal issues with the royal family and in her marriage to then-Prince Charles.
Prince Harry Addresses King Charles Rift: He 'Won't Speak to Me'
“Harry did what his mother did and it’s impossible to come back into the fold after that,” the source adds. “So everyone around Charles isn’t keen on him reaching out to Harry. They understand it’s a father-son relationship but the family is so complicated, and issues of the monarchy often supersede personal relationships.”
The insider says that many at the palace have found it “hurtful” that Harry publicly spoke about Charles’ current health struggle. The monarch announced in February 2024 he was battling an undisclosed type of cancer after “undergoing a procedure for benign prostate enlargement,” per a statement from Buckingham Palace at the time.
“Everyone at the palace is upset that Harry said he doesn’t know how long Charles will live,” the source tells Us. “It’s OK for King Charles to talk about his own health.”
“Charles is obviously weighing up his options,” the source says. “But a reconciliation is not as simple as it would be in any other family.”
Samir Hussein/Samir Hussein/WireImageRoyal author Christopher Andersen expressed similar sentiments about Charles and Harry’s dynamic in an interview with Us.
“The King is concentrating on staying healthy enough to do the job he waited 70 years to do. If Charles had any inclination to reach out to Harry — and I haven’t seen any movement in that direction over the past two years — then he certainly has no reason to reach out now.” Andersen told Us on Monday, May 5. “I hate to say it, but I seriously doubt that the relationship between the King and Prince Harry will ever be resolved. There is just too much bitterness there, too many burned bridges.”
Andersen added that if Harry wanted to make amends, his current actions are an “odd way of showing it.”
“Harry delivered the coup de grace when he said he wanted to bury the hatchet with his father because he doesn’t know how much time the King has left to live. If you are someone undergoing cancer treatment, to hear those words from your son would, I think, be fairly upsetting. Not exactly a resounding vote of confidence in your chances of making a full recovery.”
Earlier this month, Harry reacted to a judge dismissing his appeal for the case and how the decision affected him and his family. (Harry and Meghan share son Prince Archie, 5, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 3.)
Prince Harry’s Most Illuminating Quotes About King Charles Relationship
“This process has only ever been about ensuring my safety and that of my immediate family when we are in the United Kingdom, so that we may safely visit my home country with the same level of security that other governments deem necessary for our protection,” he wrote via a statement shared via his and Meghan’s website. “My ask has been simple: that the standard protocols for security and risk assessments be applied to me in the same way they are to others — including people who have never carried out any public functions on behalf of the State.”
Andersen noted that while Harry is “savvy” the Duke of Sussex has an “impulsive streak and probably regrets” those comments. However, any remorse might be too late.
“But the damage is done,” the author said. “If it was hard to imagine a reconciliation before, it’s all but impossible to imagine one now. This was the final straw.”
