The New York Islanders will pick first in the 2025 NHL Draft.
The Islanders won the NHL Draft Lottery on Monday, jumping up from No. 10 to No. 1 after the draw.
The Utah Hockey Club won the second lottery draw. As teams can only move up 10 spots, Utah will pick fourth overall. The San Jose Sharks will pick No. 2 and the Chicago Blackhawks will pick at No. 3.
This will be the fifth time the Islanders will pick first in the draft. The previous players were John Tavares (2009), Rick DiPietro (2000), Denis Potvin (1973) and Billy Harris (1972).
The Sharks had the best odds (25.5 per cent) of landing the No. 1 pick. The Sharks, of course, also selected first last year, drafting forward Macklin Celebrini out of Boston University.
For the first time in its 30-year history, the broadcast featured the drawing live in-studio, allowing viewers to follow along and learn the results at the same time as the draft lottery participants.
At last year’s draft lottery, no teams changed places through the drawing.
Unlike in the past few years, there is no consensus projected No. 1 selection. However, defenceman Matthew Schaefer and centres Michael Misa, Caleb Desnoyers and James Hagens are expected to go at the top of the draft. Hagens is a native of Long Island.
The 2025 Draft takes place on June 27-28 on Sportsnet.
