A BELOVED burger chain has begun some significant changes at its restaurants.

It’s part of an initiative to improve order speed, accuracy, and more ordering options for consumers.

Rob Lynch, CEO of Shake Shack, noted during an earnings call this month that the fast food giant was on the right track.

Over the past five fiscal quarters, Shake Shack has gradually improved its speed and accuracy of service.

Average order wait times fell by a minute in 2024, something that it plans to continue improving on at its over 350 locations nationwide.

Lynch still emphasized that overall customer satisfaction remains most important amid the improvements.

“We are focused on maintaining the high levels of guest service that we have delivered over the last six month,” he told investors.

“While we’ve gotten more productive, we’ve also increased our guest satisfaction. That is our number one priority.”

To create even more customer satisfaction and better efficiency, Shake Shack confirmed that it would be implementing drive-thru combo options and digital menu boards.

The combos will only be offered through the drive-thru, but could be rolled out to diners in-restaurant or through the digital kiosks inside.

SPEEDING UP

Lynch noted that Shake Shack would be waiting to see how the combos perform at locations with a drive-thru first.

“It’s been a long time coming for this brand on drive-thru,” he said on the call.

Shake Shake ended 2024 with over 39 drive-thru-based restaurants.

It noticed some customer complaints about wait times then, and Lynch said its still a work in progress, with the combos being a new move to help continue the efficiency focus.

“We’ve tested a lot of different models to try and improve a unique drive-thru dynamic,” Lynch added.

“I mean, the reality is it takes us longer to make our food than a lot of our competitors, and our guests freak [out] at those other competitors as well.”

Shake Shack reported increased revenue year over year at about 10.5% to $320.9 million.

Foot traffic declined about 4.6%, however, which CFO Katie Fogertey noted as a result of changing consumer spending habits amid current economic uncertainty.

Lynch issued confidence moving forward for Shake Shack.

“We are getting better every day and uncovering ways to continue to improve the guest experience, push the envelope on our culinary leadership, outperform what guests expect from us, and all while reducing our operating and build costs,” he noted.

“I’m extremely excited about the potential that lies ahead.”

MCDONALD’S MOVE

With the drive-thru combos and digital menu boards, Shake Shack will compete with other giants like McDonald’s, which is currently coming for Wendy’s after bringing back a discontinued item.

Starting May 5, customers can get McCrispy Strips.

McCrispy Strips come in a three-piece or four-piece combo offering and are advertised as “crispy, juicy, and peppery.”

McDonald’s noted a huge demand for chicken strips industry-wide.

The impending return of the Snack Wrap is also expected to include the McCrispy Strips.

Other fast food chains are also making massive shifts.

Taco Bell recently made a beloved menu item permanent last month after it said demand for it was “off the charts.”

Wendy’s is also bringing Frosty Fusions to customers in May.
