Nathan Aspinall called for the viral singing referee not to be sacked, despite his dislike towards his operatic point calling.
Referee Franz Engerer has become a bit of a main attraction at tournaments, even if Luke Littler is playing, for his boyish good looks and fine vocal chords.
The German referee is a typical 24-year-old who loves football and motorbikesDuring Andrew Gilding and Callan Rydz’s match at the European Darts Trophy in the Netherlands two months ago, Engerer decided to spice up the match.
When calling 180 he sounded out notes you’d hear at The Royal Opera House – complete with vibrato.
The 24-year-old – described by Laura Woods as ‘German eye candy’ -went viral on social media with his antics seemingly being like marmite. You either love it or you hate it.
Some darts fans claimed that they ‘couldn’t watch’ any games he oversaw, asking to ‘get rid of that idiot’.
Other viewers believe he already has one of the best 180 calls of all time.
In an exclusive interview with talkSPORT, world No.8 and two-time World Darts Championship semi-finalist Aspinall said: “You know what? I was on a train and I was watching the game.
“He was shouting and I was like, ‘I actually don’t think I could play if he was reffing’.
“Nothing against the guy. I just don’t like the call so I hope he doesn’t like my games. Don’t sack him. It’s not for me.”
Engerer understands that not everyone will favour his singing but he does enjoy the positive feedback.
“Most of the feedback has been really lovely,” he said.
Aspinall’s most recent match was a loss to Littler on night 13 of the Premier League“Of course, not everyone’s a fan – and that’s fine, especially with how unique my 180 is – but it’s amazing to get that recognition.
“People come up to me asking for photos, and that’s just surreal.”
Engerer revealed that his splendid voice is a product of many years of singing lessons and being part of a choir.
He continued: “I’ve been taking singing lessons and singing in a choir since seventh grade. We’ve performed everything from operas to musicals and solos.”
The saxophone player’s first darts events came at galas and grassroots competitions like the PDC Europe Super League.
He received good feedback from smaller tournaments and decided to apply for a caller cast. The rest was history.
Engerer confessed that he was more nervous at his first gala compared to his Euro Tour debut.
