The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled left-hander Tommy Henry from Triple-A Reno, the team announced on Sunday.
Scott McGough was optioned to Reno in a corresponding move. He surrendered one hit and one walk in two scoreless innings (37 pitches) on Saturday, his only major league appearance of the season so far.
Henry would make his first appearance in the majors this season after he’s been starting games in Triple-A, but he’s expected to provide long relief for Arizona with Corbin Burnes set to miss his next start previously scheduled for Monday.
Diamondbacks’ Tommy Henry likely sliding into Ryne Nelson’s role
Ryne Nelson, who has been in the long relief role, makes the most sense to fill in for Burnes. He threw 122 pitches over his last two games, most recently on Tuesday. The two games above 50 pitches came after a four-game stretch averaging 34 pitches per outing.
Nelson gave up one run over his last two games (6.1 innings) after allowing five runs in his previous outing (0.2 innings).
Henry entered a Diamondbacks game from the bullpen twice last year, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits and five walks over 6.1 innings.
All of his appearances in Reno, both this season and over his career, have come as a starter. He has an 8.53 ERA and 1.86 WHIP, both the worst marks in his career, over six starts this season.
Catch Diamondbacks-Phillies at 11:10 a.m. MST on the Arizona Sports app, 98.7 or online. Rain is in the area, but no delays have been announced.
