Luton Town Just Fourth Team to Suffer Back-to-Back Relegations from Premier League ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

Luton Town were in the Premier League just last season; they will spend 2025-26 in the third tier following relegation from the Championship.

Luton Town have been relegated from the Championship just a year on from being in the Premier League after results did not go their way on the final day of the season.

The Hatters were away to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday and just needed to match Hull City’s result at Portsmouth.

But while Hull managed to take a 1-1 draw back up north from Fratton Park, Luton were beaten 5-3 in a thriller at the Hawthorns.

Matt Bloomfield’s Luton went into the weekend in good form, having strung together three successive Championship wins – but earning a positive result at West Brom proved a step too far.

West Brom were 5-1 up in the 61st minute, and although Luton did score twice more to restore some dignity to the scoreline, it wasn’t enough as Portsmouth were unable to do them a favour.

It means Luton have suffered back-to-back relegations, having been in the Premier League as recently as last season.

They become just the fourth club in the Premier League era to experience consecutive relegations after a season in the top flight.

Swindon Town were the first, dropping from the second tier to the third for the 1995-96 season having been in the Premier League in 1993-94.

It took until 2012-13 for another club to suffer a similar fate.

Wolves were relegated from the Premier League in 2011-12 as they finished bottom of the table, and although they had to sell some key players, they were among the favourites to go back up the next season.

Suffice to say that didn’t happen; under Stale Solbakken and then Dean Saunders, Wolves were relegated again and found themselves in League One. They did at least earn promotion straight back to the Championship.

Before Luton, the most recent to suffer consecutive relegations after being in the top flight were Sunderland in 2017-18.

The Black Cats’ 10th successive Premier League campaign was in 2016-17, but they were unable to keep their head above water this time after several difficult seasons.

A poor start to the following campaign in the Championship set the tone for a dismal year, ending in them dropping to the third tier for the first time since 1987-88.

And unlike Swindon and Wolves before them, Sunderland were unable to bounce straight back up.

They spent four seasons in League One before returning to the second tier for 2022-23.

Will Luton follow the example of Swindon and Wolves, or do another few years of third-tier obscurity await?
