The Weld County Coroner’s Office has identified two victims of a collision stemming from a police pursuit that killed three people this week on U.S. 85 near Platteville.

About 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, the coroner’s office responded to a multiple-vehicle collision on the highway, just north of Colo. 60, according to a release from the coroner’s office.

A northbound GMC Yukon on U.S. 85 crossed the center median into the southbound lanes, colliding head-on with a Toyota 4Runner, the release reports.

The Weld County Coroner’s Office identified the victim inside the Toyota 4Runner as 57-year-old Christine Ann Schwarz of Mead.

The driver of the GMC Yukon has been identified as 37-year-old Kayla Dickinson of Evans. The coroner’s office said it will release the identity of the GMC Yukon’s passenger pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

All autopsies have been conducted for this incident, the release said.

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday it is internally investigating the circumstances that led up to the collision, as the Colorado State Patrol also investigates the crash details.

The pursuit began about 3 p.m., when a patrol deputy stopped Dickinson on U.S. 85 near Colo. 60, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. The Colorado State Patrol previously reported the GMC Yukon was suspected to have been stolen, as the license plate was confirmed stolen and didn’t match the vehicle. Due to a vehicle fire as a result of the collision, the vehicle identification number was destroyed during the fire, so law enforcement are working to confirm whether the GMC Yukon was stolen.

As the deputy approached the GMC Yukon on foot, Dickinson drove away at a high rate of speed, the release states.

As the deputy was trying to relocate and contact the vehicle, Dickinson attempted to evade the deputy, crossing into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with Schwarz’s vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. Details remain limited, the sheriff’s office added.

“The Sheriff’s Office extends our condolences to the victims of this terrible incident that resulted from the actions of the suspect,” the sheriff’s office said in the release. “We ask for the patience of our community, and everyone involved while we conduct our internal investigation.”
