The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety are partnering for a live burn demonstration next week.
The demonstration will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at 11880 Campo Road in Spring Valley at the San Diego County Fire Training Center. A community resilience event will follow the demonstration from 1 to 2 p.m. at 218 South Lane in El Cajon, according to Cal Fire.
Cal Fire guests will include Fire Chief Joe Tyler, State Fire Marshal Daniel Berlant, and San Diego Unit Chief Tony Mecham. IBHS President Roy Wright will be in attendance along with “Live Burn Narrators,” which will include Senior Director for Wildfire Steve Hawks and Chief Engineer Dr. Anne Cope. California Department of Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara and Program Manager Megan Fitzgerald-McGowan from the National Fire Protection Association will also be attending the event.
Attendees will observe burning in real time as experts highlight ignition, materials used, fire behavior and effective mitigations.
“This live fire demonstration will show the effectiveness of the mitigation actions in a Wildfire Prepared Home compared to a home built with typical materials,” Cal Fire said in a statement.
Fire officials said science has proven the effectiveness of removing flammable materials within the first five feet around a residence.
The demonstration is one in a series of Wildfire Preparedness Week events.
