CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A ‘horrific’ crash that left one young man dead and several others injured in north Charlotte is now being investigated as a hit-and-run, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
A CMPD police report states the driver responsible fled the scene after striking multiple pedestrians just after 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, on Beatties Ford Road.
Witnesses described a chaotic and heartbreaking scene as bystanders rushed to help victims sprawled across the road.
"We all took off down the street to see what we could do to assist," said Tracy Setzer, who works at a nearby business. "There was a horrific scene, children in the car, all the bags were deployed, glass everywhere."
Setzer said she attempted CPR on one of the victims, but sadly, the effort was not enough.
Medic and Charlotte Fire responded. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, later identified as an 18-year-old young man. A 19-year-old young man was hospitalized with minor injuries, and another 19-year-old young man involved was reportedly not hurt, CMPD reports.
One person was rushed to Novant-Main with what authorities described as a "high-priority injury" at that time, while five others refused transport.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has now classified the case as a "traffic/hit and run (personal injury)." According to the official report, the suspect is described only as an unknown Black male. He was reportedly driving through the 1400 block of Beatties Ford Road when he struck the pedestrians, then fled the scene.
As of Friday morning, police have not announced any arrests or released further information on the deadly crash. Queen City News has reached out to CMPD for more details.
Beatties Ford Road was shut down in both directions for several hours Thursday evening but has since reopened. This investigation remains active.
