From his days as a New York real estate developer to his second term in the White House, the President loves nothing better than announcing a huge amount of money being sunk into something – ideally America and, even better, his own pockets.
Speaking to Fox News this week, Vance said that the three-year-old conflict, which Trump promised to end on day one in office, is “not going to end any time soon”.
Confused? You’re not the only one.
Vance’s role with Ukraine appears to be the bad cop. His dour assessment of the Ukraine war came a day after the US signed a deal for the country’s minerals which is being seen as a potential breakthrough between the two nations.
There is little chance that Vance would be appearing on Fox News without the White House’s blessing, so what’s he up to?
In the interview he said: “Yes, of course, (the Ukrainians) are angry that they were invaded.
There’s also a not very subtle bit of pressure being put on Zelensky – sort this out soon or we will have to walk away, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio said more bluntly last month.

What does hamper Vance is his chequered history on foreign policy, and his meeting with Pope Francis last month ended up being one of the last people the late Pontiff met before he died, prompting endless jokes at the Vice President’s expense.
And Vance caused outrage in the UK in March when he said that Ukraine wouldn’t fare well with a security guarantee from “some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years”.

It’s not only that Vance is prone to putting his foot in it, when you’re an attack dog for a boss like Trump sometimes it’s you who will get bitten.
Russian drones attacked Zaporizhzhia in the South East of Ukraine on Thursday injuring 14 people, while Moscow claimed Ukraine used drones in attacks to kill seven people in territory it controls.
With no sign of a lasting ceasefire, you can expect more of the bad cop routine from Vance as the Trump administration continues to practice its unique brand of diplomacy.
