Imagine throwing a dart in a World Championship match and nobody sees it.

Well, that unfortunate occurrence went down at Alexandra Palace in 2019 during a clash between Paul Nicholson and Kevin Burness.

The pair would have dreamt about their moment on the big stage, but wouldn’t have anticipated what unfolded.

During the first leg of the match, a sudden power cut drew the game to an immediate halt – causing the pair to temporarily leave the stage.

The rare moment of conflict left the player, organisers, fans in attendance as well as the watching public confused as to what was going on.

With the arena shrouded in darkness, the players were left in limbo and wondering whether they were going to be able to finish their match.

But fortunately, the delay was short-lived and the pair returned to stage to the jubilation of the sold-out crowd in north London.

And Burness was the beneficiary of the resumption after going on to down Nicholson 3-0 in the first round match.

Burness, who was making his debut at the showpiece event, was rewarded with a glamour second-round clash with former world champion Gary Anderson.

The Northern Irishman won nine of the 14 legs with two ton-plus finishes in the comfortable.

Despite the defeat, Nicholson certainly made his presence felt at Ally Pally with his eye-catching walk out song.

The WWE fanatic entered the stage wearing a pair of sunglasses to Joan Jett’s hit song Bad Reputation.

The entrance was compared to that of UFC fighter Ronda Rousey who used the song during her run in WWE.

The Newcastle-based Australian is no stranger to an iconic darts moment.

He is remembered for cheekily ‘waving goodbye’ to the legendary Phil Taylor after beating the 16-time world champion at the UK Open.

The World Cup final match between Nicholson’s Australia and Taylor and Adrian Lewis’ England is still thought of as one of the greatest matches in competition history.

Injuries and a loss of form hampered parts of Nicholson’s career during the 2010s which saw him spiral down the rankings while watching from home as the sport grew in stature.

He was omitted from the tour entirely as 2016 drew to a close, but quickly regained his Tour Card at 2017 Q-School.

Nicholson went on to rebuild his darts career culminating in a return to the big stage at Alexandra Palace against Burness.

The 45-year-old’s ambitions of reaching higher heights fell flat just a few months later when he announced that he will not attend the 2019 PDC Q-School in an attempt to renew his tour card.

At the time, he told fans that he needed to work on his darts, game and head in order to get himself ready for 2020 but did not return to darts.

Nicholson now works as a sports commentator and pundit for talkSPORT among others.
