The Crestview League’s playoff race in softball produced another twist Thursday courtesy of El Modena.
Sara Pinedo fired a two-hitter and catcher Parker Mayes hit a three-run home run as the Vanguards defeated host Pacifica 4-0 to move into a tie for first place with the Mariners.
Pacifica (15-10, 7-4), ranked No. 4 in Orange County this week, and No. 6 El Modena (18-7, 7-4) each have one game remaining in the Crestview League.
El Modena plays at fourth-place and surging Cypress (17-9, 5-5) on Friday.
Pacifica travels to Cypress on Tuesday.
Third-place Canyon (19-8, 6-5) closes out league by playing host to Esperanza (6-21, 2-9) on Tuesday.
Mayes homered in the fourth inning to help El Modena open a 3-0 lead. Julianna Brower drove in another run in the fifth.
Freshman Sofia Ramos added two hits, including a double, for El Modena.
In another Crestview League game:
Cypress 5, Esperanza 3: Makayla Bishop and Aubrey Lopez each had two hits and sophomore Alexis Stamper threw a complete game as the Centurions (17-9, 5-5) won their fourth straight in league.
In the Sunset League:
Los Alamitos 6, Marina 4: Jordan Castrellon went 2 for 3 with a home run and freshman Julia Gordon went 2 for 3 with a double as the visiting Griffins (15-12, 7-2) remained in first place.
Huntington Beach 12, Newport Harbor 2: Bree Carlson went 2 for 3 with her 11th home run — a school single-season record — and had three RBIs to lead the Oilers (19-7, 8-2). The sophomore also went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs in a 13-1 win in the teams’ doubleheader.
Huntington Beach trails Los Alamitos by half-a-game in league.
In the South Coast League:
Mission Viejo 3, Tesoro 2: Reece Uehara struck out eight in a complete game and went 2 for 3 with an RBI to help the Diablos (12-13, 4-2) move into second place.
