The Israeli army stated that its Chief of Staff, Major General Eyal Zamir, has issued instructions to prepare to strike Syrian government targets if what it described as “acts of violence against the Druze” do not cease.
Today, Wednesday, April 30, the Israeli army published through its official account on “X” that its forces struck with drones armed individuals who were attacking “Druze civilians” on the outskirts of Damascus.
Furthermore, the Israeli army is monitoring developments in the region, and its forces are deployed “on alert for defense in anticipation of various scenarios.”
The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation (Kan) reported via its website, in breaking news quoted from an unnamed security source, that “for the third time, the Israeli Defense Forces targeted a gathering of armed individuals in Sahnaya in the countryside of Damascus using drones.”
A correspondent from the official Syrian Alikhbaria channel reported live that Israeli aircraft flew at low altitude over the Ashrafiat Sahnaya area, coinciding with a security campaign launched by the Ministries of Defense and Interior in the city.
Additionally, an Israeli aircraft struck a site within the city where government forces were stationed, with no information available about the extent of damage resulting from the attack.
Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement indicating that the Israeli army carried out a strike in Syria targeting an “armed group” that was preparing to attack a “Druze complex.”
According to reports from Israeli media, including The Times of Israel, the strike was termed a “warning operation.”
In their statement, Netanyahu and Katz mentioned that Israel conveyed a “serious message” to the Syrian leadership, expecting it to act to prevent harm to the Druze community.
According to the Israeli newspaper, Netanyahu and Katz stated that Israel would not allow harm to come to the Druze community in Syria, “based on our deep commitment to our Druze brothers in Israel, who have familial and historical ties to their Druze brothers in Syria.”
This comment came at a time when dozens of Druze in Israel closed roads, demanding intervention in Syria amidst reports of several members of the Druze community being killed in clashes in the rural Damascus governorate, as reported by the Israeli channel “i24News”.
During the military confrontations that started in the city of Jaramana (predominantly Druze) in rural Damascus and extended to Sahnaya, drones flew over the skies of Damascus and its surrounding rural areas, whose affiliation was unknown.
Enab Baladi monitored intense drone flights at low altitudes over the capital and cities in its vicinity such as Daraya, Jdeidat Artouz, and Sahnaya.
In Jaramana, drones were visible flying at a low altitude.
Since the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, Israel has shown hostility towards the new Syrian government, with its stance extending beyond anti-government statements, as its forces have penetrated southern Syria and remain positioned in wide areas of Quneitra province, as well as some points in Daraa to this day.
